Sword and Shield takes place in the Galar region based on the United Kingdom. Galar is made up of a number of towns and villages linked by "Routes"; however, there is also an open world area in the center of the region known as the "Wild Area". Random encounters with wild Pokémon can take place in tall grass or in water bodies along trails or in the Wild Area. Wild Pokémon can also be found outside of tall grass and elsewhere, and can chase or run the player depending on their character. The player occasionally fights Trainers in cities, towns, along routes and in the Wild Area. The driving force that drives the player to travel through the Galar region is to participate in the "Gym Challenge", an open tournament to choose the best Pokémon Trainer in the region, the champion.
